Title of vol. M.DCIII
There is some question as to whether the Primera parte de la Miscelanea austral was originally issued separately from or conjointly with the Defensa de damas. Medina maintains that we are dealing with two separate works (13, 15). Vargas Ugarte, however, treats them together as a single work. Inasmuch as the title page of the Primera parte de la Miscelanea austral refers to the Defensa de damas and because the former includes "Erratas de la Defensa de damas", it would seem that we are dealing with a single work printed in two parts. However, this does not preclude the possibility that some copies of vol. 1 circulated in advance and therefore separately from the subsequently printed vol. 2
